Too Good To Go announces UK milestone of 30 million meals saved

Too Good to Go Stand: 6E10

Too Good To Go, the social impact company behind the world's largest marketplace for surplus food, is excited to announce the extraordinary milestone of saving over 30 million meals from going to food waste in the UK. Saving 30 million meals is the equivalent of avoiding 750 million CO2 emissions, which equals 14,746 flights around the world or 455 years of continuous hot showering.

With 4.5 million tonnes of food that could have been eaten being wasted every year from our homes, the accomplishment is a testament to the commitment to help reduce impact on the environment of Too Good To Go’s community of over 13 million registered users and 26,000+ active business partners in the UK.

New data from Too Good To Go reveals that in the UK, 2023 saw 36% Year over Year (YoY) growth despite the food waste app launching eight years ago in 2016. In 2023 alone, UK users saved over £95 million from using the food waste app, with the average user saving £36.39. The top 2023 user saved over 1,000 bags – that’s just under 3 bags a day!

In the UK an average of 391,615 users are active on the Too Good To Go app every day, and the top UK cities with the most active users are London, Birmingham and Bristol. The bakery sector is the most popular sector in terms of meals saved, with bakery partners including Greggs, Caffé Nero and Costa Coffee. Further data reveals that most meals were saved on a Friday, with over 3.2 million saved on Fridays in 2023!

Too Good To Go Platform Launch

New for 2024, Too Good To Go has recently announced the launch of Too Good To Go Platform. This modular end-to-end surplus food management solution enables grocery retailers, from hypermarkets to convenience stores, to unlock value from excess inventory. Powered by AI, Too Good To Go Platform seamlessly tracks and helps to redistribute surplus; and is the only system of its kind, thanks to its integration with the world's largest consumer marketplace for surplus food.

According to the European Grocery Retailing Institute, costs associated with food waste amount to an average of nearly 2% of grocery retailers’ net sales, almost equalling their average margins. "At Too Good To Go we partner with some of the world's biggest names in grocery retail, such as Carrefour, Auchan, SPAR, ALDI, Coop and many more. Every day, we drive many thousands of users into retail stores, helping our partners generate revenue and footfall from surplus food. With the introduction of Too Good To Go Platform, we can now also support their in-store inventory management, helping them make a significant difference to both their bottom line and the reduction of food waste,” says Mette Lykke, CEO of Too Good To Go.

Too Good To Go Platform currently integrates 5 modules in a single interface, offering partners a pick-and-choose modular solution to tailor their surplus food management strategy. These modules include Expiry Date Management, Recommendations, Intelligent Discounting, Marketplace, and Donations.

“Processes for expiry date checks and in-store discounting can be laborious, resource-intensive and error-prone; especially at scale,” explains Sophie Trueman, Managing Director at for Too Good To Go UK. “Too Good To Go Platform’s modular approach places in-store operations at the centre, enabling easy customisation and leveraging technology and AI to bring efficiency to daily routines,” adds Sophie Trueman.

In November, Apple awarded the Too Good To Go app at the global 2023 App Store Awards, proof of the company’s tech credentials. The app was recognised for its exceptional user experience and profound impact on society. "This award served as evidence that, through technology, companies can deliver a strong social impact. Now, from expiry date tracking to final distribution, Too Good To Go Platform enables data-driven decision-making on food waste reduction. It is a win-win-win: for the planet, for people, and for profit,” concludes Lykke.
