Retail staff abuse is costing UK businesses at least £235m per year, new analysis reveals
London, UK, 21 April 2026 –
Verbal and physical abuse against retail workers is costing UK retail a minimum
of £235m1 in people costs – a figure that could rise to as much as
£1bn when under-reporting is factored in.
The figures have been brought
to light by Reveal Media, the global body-worn video provider, to surface the
true workforce cost of retail abuse - one that spans staff absence, employee
turnover, lost working time, injury-related compensation, and the lasting drag
on team morale.
To
help retailers better understand their business impact, Reveal Media has
launched a new Violence & Aggression Cost Calculator tool, designed to provide
an indicative figure of the annual cost of abuse against staff, specific to
their store and incident levels. The calculator, which is endorsed by leading
charity Retail Trust, helps organisations put an indicative figure on an issue
that is often discussed in human terms, but not always measured in commercial
ones.
“Retail abuse is often
discussed in terms of its human impact, but the cost to employers is
substantial”, says Alasdair Field, CEO, Reveal Media. “Our analysis shows that
once you factor in absence, lost time and wider workforce disruption, the bill
for retailers adds up quickly. And in reality, this may only be the baseline. Verbal
abuse especially is widely acknowledged as being under-reported across retail
as it’s unfortunately become normalised, meaning the true cost is likely to be even
higher than many employers first estimate.”
While crimes such as theft
and shoplifting are widely perceived as the sector’s biggest financial drain,
abuse against retail colleagues is proving to be a major, and far less visible,
cost driver. This financial toll is being driven by a problem that remains
widespread across the sector. Recent
findings from the British Retail Consortium reveal that there
are over 1,600 incidents of violence and abuse against retail workers every
day, underlining the scale of pressure facing frontline teams across both
in-store and delivery roles. However, the true scale of the issue is likely to
be far greater. It is widely acknowledged across the industry that many
incidents go unreported, with Reveal Media estimating that actual volumes could
be up to five times higher2
than official figures suggest – significantly increasing the overall cost to
the sector.
“Too often, the impact of
abuse on retail staff is measured only in the moment, when in reality the
effects can last much longer for both colleagues and businesses”, says Poppie
Foakes, Director of Wellbeing Innovation, Retail Trust. “The Cost Calculator
tool developed by Reveal Media is helping retailers understand the commercial impact
of incidents of violence and aggression, highlighting that this is not simply an
HR issue, but a business one”.
The calculator allows users
to input information such as workforce size, salary levels and known incident
numbers– or apply pre-set industry benchmarks where specific data isn’t
available – to generate a cost estimate tailored to their organisation. The
model accounts for under-reporting and draws on authoritative industry data to
build a more accurate picture of the true cost to retailers over time. It is
informed by Reveal Media’s experience working with retail organisations
globally since 2017.
