TBW and CCL join forces to bring a new generation of affordable Self-Checkout to UK retail sector
The Barcode Warehouse has announced a new partnership with global retail technology specialist CCL Tech to introduce a new generation of affordable self-checkout and electronic point-of-sale (EPOS) systems to the UK.

The partnership aims to shake up a sector long dominated by the same players, where consistency and the status quo have limited choice and kept prices high. Together, we will offer quality, design-led, user-friendly self-service technology that delivers both affordability and innovation, setting a new standard for retailers and shoppers alike.

Under the agreement, TBW will provide a complete self-checkout hardware solution. Its engineering, support and installations teams will drive project success from initial engagement through the full lifecycle of the operation. TBW also collaborates closely with software partners to ensure a smooth transition to new technology.

Jason Datt, Retail Account Director - Enterprise at TBW said: “CCL are a giant in this industry. Together we’re going to bring something to the retail sector and their customers that isn’t available today: a top-quality self-checkout solution at a competitive price. Why does self-checkout have to be so expensive and complicated? It doesn’t.”

The timing of the partnership reflects a sharp rise in demand for automation across the retail sector, driven by higher labour costs, evolving shopper expectations and advances in artificial intelligence (AI) Retailers are increasingly turning to self-service systems to improve efficiency, redeploy staff to higher-value tasks and reduce queues at peak trading hours.

CCL’s software-agnostic kiosks promise flexibility for retailers of all sizes, with a design focus that echoes the familiar feel of smartphones and tablets. Built-in loss-prevention features, analytics dashboards and AI-ready capabilities are designed to help stores balance speed with security.

Marcel Segers, International Sales Director, CCL, said: “CCL was relatively unknown in the UK retail space until recently, but we’ve grown fast in Europe and needed a well-established partner who could help us scale. TBW impressed us from day one. Their retail solutions expertise is very evident and their technical team’s wide experience in implementing new systems and the ongoing managed services aspect of their operations is impressive. This partnership is about bringing affordable, innovative self-checkout technology to more retailers.”

For UK retailers managing a tight labour market and rising operating costs, the message from TBW and CCL is clear: a new generation of affordable self-checkout is here.

The official launch took place at TBW’s Innovation and Customer Experience (ICE) Centre in Newark on 12 November.

CCL is also set to be one of the partners to feature on TBW’s stand at the Retail Technology Show 2026 at ExCel London on 23-24 April.
